What is Salary Confidential, and who is it for?

Overview

Salary Confidential is a confidential, peer-to-peer data platform for professionals who want focused, real-world compensation insights — not recruiter hearsay or scraped averages.
It connects Requesters, who launch targeted surveys, with Respondents, who share their compensation data anonymously in exchange for access to the final report of aggregated results.

Why it exists

Salary data online often lacks clear provenance: how old is the data? How well does it map to your specific case, even if the title and company are known? Salary Confidential balances precision with privacy: you define the exact peer group you want to understand — the actual individuals you’d like to hear from —, collect a minimum of four verified responses, and gain access to trustworthy, highly tailored benchmarks without exposing anyone’s identity even when the sample is very small

Why is it different?

Salary benchmarking or data platforms give up precision in favor of large data sets. It's not uninteresting, but it may not help you exactly land where you want to confidently place your negotiation. The reason for this is that you don't know exactly the context for the data these services have gathered.

With Salary Confidential, you identify the peers first: people who match the precise context of your own search, with a similar background, working at peer companies. Whatever data you obtain, you will always be sure that it is highly relevant to your underlying situation. This is what makes it uniquely useful

This also gives folks in niche roles, or in roles where industry context affects compensation, a way to access sure-footed numbers since the sample of respondents is controlled by you

What problem does the platform solve, versus general anonymous surveys

Anonymous survey tools promise that respondents are anonymous but the data itself will tell a story. In very small samples, de-anonymizing through the data itself becomes even easier. Salary Confidential solves the issue of micro-data anonymity by shaping question design, by enforcing specific release mechanisms, and by controlling the shape of results report so respondents can't be triangulated. Salary Confidential is using methods from the world of k-anonymity research to make the ability of a respondent or requester to trace back a response to a person near impossible, even in very small groups (our minimum size is 4.)

Respondents have incentives to help you

The reason these potential respondents may help you is two-fold:

  • Sharing their data will not expose their privacy because the platform makes it very difficult for you, as a requester, or for other respondents to know who is behind what number. Salary Confidential escrows the data and releases it in such ways that while the data is clear, the exact provenance stays blurry.
  • The other reason is that respondents have an interest in this data: They get access to the report you are building, as peers helping peers. If you are running a survey in which their data is relevant, it is likely all other peers are also relevant to them. It is on this premise that the data you are gathering as requesters is a fair value exchange for everyone participating.
